Best Advent prayer apps (what each one actually offers)

“Best Advent prayer app” is not one product. Some apps run a named 25-day community challenge. Some drop a seasonal series into a daily office that already exists. Some publish Advent writing on the web and leave the in-app season implied. This page sorts those apart, from each company’s own live pages, on the day we checked.

The date, because the apps do not agree

Hallow’s own Advent 2026 guide states: “Advent starts on Sunday, November 29, 2026 and ends on Christmas.” That is the Western liturgical season: four Sundays before Christmas. Several apps, including ours, also run a December 1–25 countdown because that is how paper calendars work. Those are not the same thing. A page that pretends they are is selling a convenience calendar as the Church year.

As of today — about twelve weeks before Advent Sunday — most 2026 in-app themes are not posted yet. Hallow’s 2025 Pray25 page is still live; YouVersion’s plan search still returns last year’s dated plans alongside evergreen ones. We report what the live pages say today, not what marketing copy will say in November.

What “an Advent app” can mean

A community challenge with a name. Hallow’s Pray25 is the example. It has a hashtag, a waitlist, celebrity guides, a kids track, and a published claim from the 2025 edition that more than 200,000 people had already joined. Nothing else on this list matches that scale. If that is what you want, stop here and use Hallow.

A free reading plan you pick yourself. YouVersion. There is no single YouVersion Advent; there are many, in many lengths, from many publishers, including Life.Church. You can start one without paying anyone, including us.

The ordinary daily office, turned toward the season. Lectio 365 does this as a first-class series. Abide does it as tagged meditations. Glorify points Advent readers at the daily devotional they already ship. These are quieter than Pray25. For some people they are better, because the habit you keep in January is the same habit you kept in December.

Where these apps are better than Seraph

This is the section a comparison written by a competitor usually skips.

• Hallow’s Advent is a public event. Pray25 is named on the App Store, on hallow.com/advent/, and in the paid-benefits table. Seraph’s Calendar is a private reading journey with no community layer, no kids track, and no guest guides. If you want to pray Advent with a parish or with a few hundred thousand other people, Hallow is the honest recommendation, and we are not in that contest.
• Hallow will sometimes give you Pray25 without paying them directly. Their parish-help article: “You don't need a Hallow Subscription to participate in your parish's prayer challenges — your parish has unlocked them for the whole community.” Seraph has no parish unlock and no scholarship path.
• YouVersion and Lectio 365 give the season away. YouVersion’s Advent plans and Lectio’s Advent series cost nothing. Seraph gates the Candle-Lighting Calendar behind Seraph+. If “free Advent” is the requirement, they meet it and we do not.
• YouVersion’s Scripture breadth is not close. 3,500+ versions against our single King James. If you want the readings in NIV, ESV, NRSV, or any language other than English, Seraph cannot help you.
• Lectio 365 already lives inside Advent, Lent, Easter and Pentecost as one year. Seraph has Sacred Seasons for Advent and Lent only. If you want the Church year as the app’s spine, Lectio is built for that; we are not, yet.
• Abide is cheaper, publishes a trial, and publishes a scholarship. $39.99 a year against our $59.99, seven days free, and a written offer of one-year scholarships. Seraph has none of those three.
• Hallow, Pray.com, Glorify and Abide already publish Advent pages we cite below. Hallow’s Pray25 archive, Glorify’s 2022–2023 Advent essays, Pray.com’s Advent article, and Abide’s live Advent players all predate Seraph’s first Advent in 2026. Their libraries are larger than ours by orders of magnitude.
• Seraph is iPhone and web only. If you use Android, Seraph is not an option.

What Seraph’s Advent actually is

Three things, and not more. It is a calendar: one reading a day from December 1 to December 25, four candles, ending at the Nativity. It is paid: the journey is part of Sacred Seasons, and Sacred Seasons is Seraph+. The daily office — verse, two guided sessions, the whole KJV, every reading plan, the flame — stays available without paying. It is private: no account, no ads, no prayer analytics. Prayer data stays on the device. The iPhone app bundles all 1,189 KJV chapters for offline reading; on the web, chapters you have opened stay readable, which is not the same thing.

Seraph+ is $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year, auto-renews, and you can cancel anytime. Those are the US prices on our App Store listing today. The web subscription and the iPhone subscription are separate purchases and do not unlock each other — buy on the platform you will pray on. There is no trial of the paid Calendar; the free office is the trial of Seraph, not of Advent.

Who each one is actually for

Hallow — if you want Advent as a Catholic community

Rosary, daily Gospel, Bible in a Year with Fr. Mike on the free tier; Pray25, sleep, music and the rest of the library on a subscription, unless a parish has unlocked the challenge. An account is required even to use the free app. That combination — Catholic specificity plus a named December challenge — is the category leader, and we will not pretend otherwise.

YouVersion — if you want Scripture, for free, in the translation you already use

Pick a 4-day wreath plan or a 25-day countdown. Complete any Advent or Christmas plan in December and, at least as of their 2025 challenge post, you get a badge. No subscription exists to upsell you. The trade is a sign-up if you want the full plan library, and a product that is a Bible app first.

Lectio 365 — if you want the season inside a daily office you will still open in January

Morning Lectio Divina, midday Lord’s Prayer, night Examen, with Advent as one series among the year’s series. Donation-funded. No paid tier. No in-app purchases. If “completely free, including Advent” is the whole requirement, this is the answer, and it is a better free promise than ours.

Pray.com — if you already live in their audio library

Their Advent pages are articles and a calendar CTA, not a documented equivalent of Pray25. The wider app is a large evangelical audio catalogue with a free tier that still carries ads — including, on their own plans table, ads on Premium. Use it for Advent if you already use it for prayer. Do not pick it on the strength of a seasonal challenge we could not verify.

Glorify — if the daily quote–passage–devotional loop is already your December

They write about Advent. They sell the daily rhythm. They have not, on the first-party pages we could reach today, documented a named Advent challenge. Their price remains unpublished outside the app. That is a fact about their marketing, not a slight.

Abide — if you want short spoken meditations and a lower annual price

Sunday-of-Advent players, “Choosing Peace” / “Choosing Love” sessions, a 4-day YouVersion plan, and a scholarship policy. The free tier is thin by their own wording. The paid year is the lowest published annual number on this page.

Seraph — if you want a quiet December calendar with no account

Ours, last on purpose. A 25-day reading journey, a flame, the KJV, no sign-up. Paid for the season, free for the office. Small, new, iPhone-and-web only. If none of those sentences is what you came for, one of the six apps above is the better fit, and we would rather you found it here than felt sold to.
